We Have Cover Art

The LA Philharmonic announced today its world premiere recording of the recently-discovered Prologue to the unfinished opera Orango, by Dmitri Shostakovich, will be released June 19th. The live recording also features conductor laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen leading a searing performance of the Shostakovich Symphony No. 4 from the same concert earlier this season.

Also today, Deutsche Grammophon unveiled the cover art for the album. A Soviet-inflected font with a grainy image of the half-ape/half-man title character.

This concert was one of the highlights of the current LA Phil season. Perhaps you heard it recently as part of the LA Phil broadcasts on Classical KUSC. The two-CD set will be priced at $18.99. Here’s E-P on Orango.

  1. This is awesome news on many levels. Glad it’s coming out, glad it’s on CD and not just digital download, glad they included the Shosty 4th along w/ “Orango,” and glad it’s a reasonably priced $18.99 (at least it’s reasonable for a 2CD set).

    BTW: Really liking the blog.

    1. Thanks for sharing your year’s hhhiliggts I enjoyed reading them.I also count the Shostakovich Violin Concerto as performed by Lisa Batiashvili as one of the hhhiliggts of my concert-going year; and shortly afterwards I was fortunate to hear Leila Josefowicz’ amazing rendition of the Adams concerto with the SPCO. It was a very good year for violin performance in the Twin Cities!

Sugerente
